Gait Meter

Gait Meter General

General
The patented Gaitometer is designed to measure the asymmetry of the step pattern when worn by the user, and provide real-time audible and visual feedback. This feedback can assist the user in reducing or eliminating these types of gait abnormalities.

The Gaitometer should be worn firmly at the CENTER OF BODY. Using a belt clip, fanny pack, firmly fitting backpack, or sliding under the center beltline will yield the best results. DO NOT wear the device in a side pocket, on hip, on arm, or in a loose article of clothing.

The Gaitometer will work best on consistent surfaces such as sidewalks, running tracks, treadmills, stairways, etc. Walking on bumpy sidewalks, hiking trails, inside the home, or other inconsistent walking surfaces or paths will yield incorrect results.

Gait Meter Gauge

Gauge
The Gait Meter Gauge will display step asymmetry by measuring the duration of each step compared to the duration of the previous step when walking or running. This "Gait Ratio" for the current step will be displayed in the Gait Meter. A symmetric gait cadence will yield a "Gait Ratio" value near 1.0, while an asymmetric gait cadence will yield a Gait Ratio substantially higher.

Start Button

Start Button
Press the Start button to begin measuring steps and calculating the Gait Ratio. A five second countdown will allow time to place the device in the desired position (wear at CENTER OF BODY). A selectable Gait Warning sound is used to provide immediate feedback to make the user aware of any gait irregularity, and allow the user to reduce the gait irregularity.

The Gait Meter can be Paused (or Resumed) at any time by pressing the appropriate button. Data will only be collected while the Gait Meter view is visible. The Gait Meter will not collect data while the Gaitometer App is in the background.

Mute Button

Mute Button
The Gait Ratio feedback sound can be Muted or Unmuted by pressing the appropriate button.

Screen Lock

Screen Lock
The Gaitometer will only measure steps and provide feedback while the application is in the foreground and the Gait Meter screen is visible. To prevent accidentally pressing any of the other tab bar options or Gait Meter buttons, select the Gait Meter Lock button to lock (or unlock) the screen.

Average Gait Values

Average Gait Values
The Average Gait Ratio of all measured steps will be displayed, as well as the total number of steps and average step time used in calculating the Avg Gait Ratio. Pressing the Reset Avg button will reset these values.

Step Ignored

Step Ignored
If a "stray" step occurs where the Gait Ratio of the current step is above the Gait Warning Upper Limit, the step will be ignored and not affect the average values or the gait history. In addition, a "no step" icon will be briefly displayed.

History

History

General
The measured Gait Ratio for the most recent 30 time periods will be displayed in the history screen. The data can be displayed in Minute, Hour, or Day increments. A minimum number of steps are required to store a history point for each time period (10+ steps per Minute | 50+ steps per Hour | 100+ steps per Day).

Pressing the Reset button will erase all the history values for the selected time period.

History Avatar

Avatar
An avatar will display an animated simulation of the gait asymmetry for the most recent time period.

Options

Options

Step Sensitivity
The Step Sensitivity can be adjusted to best recognize the step force of the user (1 = least sensitive | 9 = most sensitive).

Gait Meter Gauge Options

Lower Limit

Gait Warning Lower Limit and Sound
The Gait Warning Lower Limit is the Gait Ratio value below which no Gait Warning feedback will occur, and the step will be treated as a Regular Step. A selectable regular step feedback sound will occur when the Gait Ratio is below the lower limit.

Upper Limit

Gait Warning Upper Limit and Sound
The Gait Warning Upper Limit is the Gait Ratio value above which steps will be ignored. This setting can be useful for ignoring steps associated with starting or stopping suddenly, stepping up a curb, etc. A selectable Gait Warning feedback sound (where the sound frequency is proportional to the Gait Ratio) will occur when the Gait Ratio is between the lower limit and upper limit.

Gait Warning Filter

Gait Warning Filter
The Gait Warning Filter mutes the Gait Warning feedback sound when the number of warning steps is less than or equal to the Filter steps setting. This setting can be useful for preventing Gait Warning feedback associated with a momentary break in the step pattern.

Reset Options

Reset Options
Pressing the Reset Options button will restore all the Options settings to their default values.
